Edibles 101: A Beginner's Guide

Edibles are one of the most approachable ways to consume cannabis — no smoke, no smell, no equipment. But they're also where people most often have a bad experience, almost always because they didn't know the rules going in. Here's how to do it right.
Rule #1: Start Low, Go Slow
This is the most important sentence in this entire guide. Take a small dose. Wait two hours. Then decide.
Canadian edibles are legally capped at 10mg of THC per package, which is great because it removes a lot of the guesswork. But even 10mg can be too much for a first-timer. We recommend starting with 2.5mg — that's a quarter of a typical gummy or a quarter of a chocolate.
Why Edibles Feel So Different
When you smoke or vape cannabis, THC enters your bloodstream through your lungs and hits your brain within minutes. The effects peak quickly and fade within a couple of hours.
When you eat cannabis, THC is metabolized by your liver into 11-hydroxy-THC — a more potent compound than regular THC. That's why edibles feel stronger and last longer. The catch: it takes time. Edibles typically take 45 minutes to 2 hours to kick in, with peak effects 2–4 hours later, and total duration of 6–8 hours.
The Most Common Mistake
Someone takes a gummy, doesn't feel anything after 45 minutes, takes another one, then another. Three hours later, all three doses hit at once. Now they're in for a rough afternoon.
Don't be that person. Set a timer for two hours. Don't redose until the timer goes off, no matter what.
Setting Yourself Up for Success
Eat a real meal first (an empty stomach makes the effects more intense and unpredictable). Stay hydrated. Have snacks nearby — the munchies are real. Clear your schedule. Be somewhere comfortable with people you trust.
If you do over-consume: don't panic. You can't overdose on THC in any medically dangerous way. Find a calm spot, drink water, eat something, and remember that the feeling will pass. Time and patience are the cure.
What to Try First
Gummies are the most popular starting point because dosing is precise and they taste good. Chocolates and baked goods are also great options. Beverages hit a bit faster (closer to 30–60 minutes) and can be easier on the stomach.
